Fertility

It is not possible to say how long it might take a couple to become pregnant because it is different for everyone. Some women become pregnant quickly, and for others this can take longer. This may be an upsetting and difficult time for couples.

Fertility problems affect 1 in 7 couples in the UK. There are a number of different reasons that some couples may struggle to conceive and for 25% of couples, fertility problems are not explained. If you have been trying for a baby for 1 to 2 years, you should seek support and advice from your GP. If you are over 36 years of age, or have known conditions that may affect your fertility, you may wish to seek support from your GP sooner.

There are a number of things that may impact on fertility:

  • Age
  • Smoking will negatively affect both men and women's fertility
  • Weight. A BMI of 30 or above may reduce fertility. Being underweight will also impact fertility.
  • Sexually transmitted diseases (STIs). Some STIs, such as chlamydia, can reduce fertility.
