CO Monitoring
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas which you can’t see or smell but which is dangerous to you and your baby. The most common way to be exposed to CO is by smoking or by being around other people who smoke. In rare cases there may be CO in your home which is dangerous; it is recommended that you have a CO monitor in your home. Exposure can prevent oxygen reaching your baby, slow its growth and development, and can result in miscarriage, stillbirth and sudden infant death.
Exposure to CO can be measured through a quick and simple breath test provided by your midwife. The test will give you a number which measures the amount of carbon monoxide in parts per million (PPM).
