Living well with a lung condition
One in five people in England are living with a lung condition and around 10,000 people in the UK are newly diagnosed with a lung disease every week. If you have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma, there are small things that you can do, to help you stay well and live well.
The Frimley Health and Care respiratory network, has been working hard to support local people living with a lung condition stay well this winter. During this time, they found that those who had a little extra knowledge and information, were better able to care for their lungs and their general health and wellbeing.
Joanne King, Respiratory Consultant Nurse, Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust says “We find when a patient understands their condition, their medication and can recognise what triggers their condition - they are better able to care for themselves and make an informed decision when to seek medical support early, preventing escalation and even hospital admission”.
Both winter and summer bring risks for those living with a lung condition, so alongside patients with COPD and Asthma, we have designed new resources, that can be used year-round, to help you to feel more informed and empowered to live well with a lung condition.
Top tips to remember in summer are:
- Stay cool and hydrated – carry water and a small fan with you when you go out
- Check the weather – hot or humid air may trigger you symptoms. If it’s too hot stay indoors
- Allergies may get worse – ensure you check with your health care team which medications are right for you
- Keep your house cool – closing blinds and curtains, keeping windows shut until the early evening and using a fan will help keep your home cooler than outside
- Understand your medications and ensure you are using them correctly to get the most benefit. Speak to your healthcare team or community pharmacist if you need support
- Keep a diary or create a self-management plan to help you, your healthcare team and your family keep you well
- Talk to those around you about how you feel
- Keep active through safe exercise and activity
