Stress Awareness Month

April marks Stress Awareness Month and has done so since 1992. It’s an important time to reflect on the causes of stress and explore practical ways to manage it. Stress Awareness Month provides an opportunity to share helpful techniques, raise awareness of the support available, and encourage open, honest conversations about stress with those around us. It’s also a chance to help reduce the stigma associated with mental health and stress.

This year's theme, #LeadWithLove, reminds us to encourage people to treat themselves and each other with kindness, compassion, and acceptance even in the face of adversity.

Stress affects everyone differently and at different periods in their lives. It’s crucial to recognise the signs and have the right tools to manage it effectively to ensure it doesn’t impact your health.

Signs of stress to look out for:

  • anxiety
  • loneliness
  • fatigue
  • headaches
  • irritability
  • sleep problems
  • panic attacks
  • feeling overwhelmed.

Here are some practical tips to help manage your stress levels:

  • ensuring good sleep health
  • stay connected with others and talk openly about your feelings
  • take time to walk outside, breathe fresh air, and enjoy nature
  • revisit hobbies or activities that bring you joy
  • incorporate physical activity into your routine
  • eat a balanced, nutritious diet to support your wellbeing
