World Suicide Prevention Day – Together, We Can Help Save Lives
Today, 10th September, is World Suicide Prevention Day, a time to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and reinforce the message that suicide is preventable.
It’s a powerful reminder that we all have a role to play, no matter how big or small, in supporting those who may be struggling. Whether it’s checking in on a friend, listening without judgment, or simply being present, your actions can make a real difference. You don’t need to be a professional, you just need to be there.
According to recent research by Samaritans, of the people who have had suicidal thoughts:
- 60% said their suicidal thoughts were interrupted by someone close to them, such as a friend or family member.
- 14% said they were interrupted by a stranger or someone they didn’t know.
Suicidal thoughts can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or background. Yet many people don’t talk about how they feel, often due to fear of judgment or not wanting to burden others.
Signs to look out for might include:
- withdrawing from social contact
- expressing feelings of hopelessness
- noticeable changes in mood or behaviour
- talking about feeling trapped or not wanting to go on
If you're concerned about someone, reaching out and asking, “Are you ok?” can be the first step toward a life-saving conversation.
