Reduced fetal movements

Most women will start to feel their baby move between 16 and 24 weeks of pregnancy. This may feel like a combination of swirling and fluttering movements and as your pregnancy continues, this may feel like jerkier kicks!

You must call the hospital on 0300 013 2004
  • Your baby is moving less than normal;
  • Your baby is not moving;
  • There is change to your baby’s usual pattern of movement.
Do not delay calling the hospital if you are concerned. You will be asked to come to the hospital so we can check your baby.

There is not a set number of movements that babies move each day. Every baby is different, so you do not need to count the number of movements you feel. Instead, it is important you get to know what is normal for your baby and contact the hospital if you are worried the movements are no longer normal for you and your pregnancy.

Important: Do not use a heartbeat Doppler machine to listen to your baby’s heartbeat at home. This is not a reliable way to check your baby’s health. Even if you hear a heartbeat, this does not mean your baby is well. If you are worried, you should contact the hospital.
